Toevlug Centre for Substance Use Disorders welcomes individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders.  To ensure our programmes meet the unique needs of each patient, we have established the following admission criteria:

Adult Programme
(Ages 18 – 65)

  • Both male and female patients are accommodated.

  • Patients must be able to speak either English or Afrikaans. (Xhosa-speaking therapist available for individual therapy sessions).

Adolescent Programme
(Ages 13 – 17)

  • Only male patients are accommodated.

  • Patients must be able to speak either English or Afrikaans. (Xhosa-speaking therapist available for individual therapy sessions).

General Admission Requirements

  • Voluntary admission – Patients must be willing to participate in treatment.

  • Involuntary admission – Court order required upon admission.

  • Education – No specific educational requirements, but school education is beneficial.

  • Motivation – A willingness to engage in treatment is advantageous.

  • Religion – All religions are accommodated.

  • Legal status – No pending court cases.

  • Medical stability – Patients must be medically stable for detoxification purposes.

  • Psychiatric stability – Patients must be psychiatrically stable.

  • Physical disabilities – Patients with physical disabilities are accommodated if they can perform self-care tasks independently.  Disability-friendly bathrooms are available.

  • Discharge address – Patients must have a confirmed discharge address.
